The municipal waste management company in Berlin, the Berliner Stadtreinigungsbetriebe, has a fleet of more than 300 waste collection trucks. The company collects organic and residual waste from every household in the city. The fleet includes 50 Daimler CNG waste collection trucks and a mobile filling station. Moreover, the company has a long experience of using NGVs and CNGs and recently commissioned a second fast -action CNG fuel station.
The company’s CNG HRS system refuels vehicles with compressed natural gas. The system can be used by commercial fleets and private individuals, and its prices are one-third less than gasoline and diesel.
Zero-emissions electric RCVs
As a growing number of communities switch to zero-emissions vehicles, eRCVs provide a solution to the waste collection problem. These vehicles are more energy efficient, require less fuel, and are quieter. In addition, eRCVs reduce GHG and noise pollution, two of the main concerns of modern communities.
While conventional diesel RCVs are ideal for the collection of recyclable materials, they are limited in payload capacity. A traditional 26-tonne diesel RCV can only carry 10 tonnes of garbage, so waste management companies often have to deploy additional vehicles, pay overtime labour rates, and operate multiple shifts. Electric RCVs have zero tailpipe emissions, which means that the emissions produced by these vehicles can stay outside of urban areas. Additionally, an RCV powered by battery technology doesn’t have to worry about recharging its battery, which allows it to cover a ten-hour route.
