How is the Turbo Waste Disposal Company Running on CNG?

With 165 RCVs running on CNG (biogas produced from waste), the Berlin Waste Authority employs over 5,400 people. The city collects 75,000 tonnes of organic waste per year. The company uses innovative technologies to reduce the environmental impact of their waste collection. This includes the use of fast-action CNG fuel pumps. In addition, 50% of the company’s fleet uses CNG fuel.

Fast-action CNG fuel pumps

The municipal waste management company in Berlin, the Berliner Stadtreinigungsbetriebe, has a fleet of more than 300 waste collection trucks. The company collects organic and residual waste from every household in the city. The fleet includes 50 Daimler CNG waste collection trucks and a mobile filling station. Moreover, the company has a long experience of using NGVs and CNGs and recently commissioned a second fast -action CNG fuel station.

The company’s CNG HRS system refuels vehicles with compressed natural gas. The system can be used by commercial fleets and private individuals, and its prices are one-third less than gasoline and diesel.

Zero-emissions electric RCVs

As a growing number of communities switch to zero-emissions vehicles, eRCVs provide a solution to the waste collection problem. These vehicles are more energy efficient, require less fuel, and are quieter. In addition, eRCVs reduce GHG and noise pollution, two of the main concerns of modern communities.

While conventional diesel RCVs are ideal for the collection of recyclable materials, they are limited in payload capacity. A traditional 26-tonne diesel RCV can only carry 10 tonnes of garbage, so waste management companies often have to deploy additional vehicles, pay overtime labour rates, and operate multiple shifts. Electric RCVs have zero tailpipe emissions, which means that the emissions produced by these vehicles can stay outside of urban areas. Additionally, an RCV powered by battery technology doesn’t have to worry about recharging its battery, which allows it to cover a ten-hour route.

Recyclable materials

Berlin is a major hub for recycling management. Its businesses range from classic disposal companies to startups that turn old materials into innovative products. Some of these companies are located in CleanTech Business Park Marzahn Hellersdorf and the Berlin TXL – The Urban Tech Republic.

Bio stuff, also known as bio waste, makes up almost half of the total garbage in Germany. This includes food scraps, coffee filters, tea bags, and garden waste. These materials are collected in special brown bins and emptied regularly during the summer months.
